I took this fellow's photo earlier today, and I honestly don't know if it's a bee or some sort of fly.

For the most part it looks like a bee to me, however they usually have way more hair over here.

I was going to guess 'Hover Fly'. But after reading that link Frank, I see they and 'Drone Fly' are one in the same - la meme chose! (Sorry, the 'Sudbury' in me just crept out. :'( '( )

Thanks Frank I just learned something :)
I wasn't quite as close as it looks. Although that is the photo, with no cropping or anything I was still around 3 feet away, shooting with a 135mm f2.8 on my Vivitar 2x Macro teleconverter.
Although most animals trust me, and let me get far closer than most people. I don't think that you saw this one, where I was as close as it looks.

Shot through my old Pentax K100D, which I gave to my student.
She knew I was there, and chose to come up to me.

Great moose shot!

Calves can be curious not yet feeling or understanding the fear of humans.
That said, though, I've been within 10' of a massive bull moose in the bush. Trust me, he had absolutely no fear of me! I, on the other hand, was quaking in my boots!
I have a huge respect for animals that can grow planks of lumber out of their heads! :'( '(
